Creamy, fresh guacamole. This is the absolute PERFECT party side snack, or an easy breakfast on toast. Tweak the recipe as much as you’d like to make this guacamole your own.
What is guacamole?
Guacamole is a mashed together blend of fresh avocados, onions, chiles, and cilantro. It utilizes lime juice and salt to bring a subtle tart tang that makes it irresistible.
This creamy avocado spread is believed to have originated from ancient Mexico. The Aztecs were the first to make it, using the natural ingredients that grew nearby.
Now, guacamole is an extremely popular dish for how easy it is to make, and how versatile it can be.
Spread some on a piece of whole grain toast for a filling breakfast in a pinch. Dip your favorite chips in some for a go to party snack. Add it into burritos, tacos, sandwiches, and burgers.
There’s no boundaries when it comes to guacamole!
Tools for making guacamole
All you truly need to make guacamole is a knife, a fork, and a bowl.
Using something like a pastry cutter or a masher will speed up the process significantly.
It’s also ideal to have a sturdy cutting board. Be sure that if you plan to add a chile pepper in the mix, you use a synthetic mat to prevent the chile juice from leeching into a wood cutting board.
I’ve also used a food processor for larger batches or to get a creamier texture.
ingredients of choice
As I mentioned earlier, guacamole does traditionally contain fresh sliced jalapeno.
However, I chose to leave chile’s out of this recipe since I feel it’s up to people on whether or not to include them. A fresh pepper can be pretty hot for a lot of people!
If you prefer a more mild heat level, I suggest adding a touch of hot sauce to the guacamole rather than a fresh chile.
I’ve also seen guacamole include fresh tomatoes and garlic. I opted to leave the tomatoes out of this one, and used garlic powder in place of fresh garlic.
To adjust the flavors of this recipe:
- Up the onion to increase sweetness
- Add lime to increase tartness
- Add hot sauce or chile’s to intensify the heat
- Increase salt to up overall flavor and saltiness
- Add more fresh cilantro to add freshness and lift
